BURANTEATR

The idea to found a theatre was born in heads of two students of Theatre Faculty of Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno — Zetel and Jan Šotkovský in year 2003. The students felt a strong need to create a theatre group driven by common goals, similar theatre taste and enthusiasm and not by payslips. In 2004 a theatre group called Tramtarie was set up in Olomouc and during one theatre season produced five theatre productions.

In 2005, the group moved to Brno and tried to proceed with theatre activities. The director of the group changed the name to BURANTEATR. The name was given according to the word "buran" meaning strong cold windstorm usually in Siberia, in order to express strong rejection to the former cultural practices in the city. The period what followed

was in a sense of nomadic theatre. BURANTEATR was renting space for the productions, rehearsals were held in cold and inhospitable places like old factory building, because the theatre could not afford to pay regular performance space. After three years of nomadic theatre, the director finally found a space and a person willing to support independent theatre scene. Thanks to a generous offer came from an owner of one Czech bookstore, BURANTEATR moved to a bookstore building and in one of its part built own small theatre space.

Within the current third phase, BURANTEATR perform regularly in its own space, in a centre for independent culture named STADION.
